Lord Dattatreya - Guru Bhairava

Guru Bhairava

The Timeless Guru of Inner Flame — Beyond form, beyond knowledge, beyond time

🕉️ The Primal Spark of Awakening 🕉️

On the sacred occasion of Guru Purnima, when the full moon reflects the brilliance of Guru Tattva across the cosmos, we bow to Guru Bhairava — He who is beyond form, beyond knowledge, beyond time. He is the primal spark of awakening, the stillness behind action, and the destroyer of falsehood.

"Bhairavo Gururevahi, Bhairavi Shaktirūpiṇī"
— The Guru shines in Bhairava; in Bhairavi, his grace flows.

Let this be a living sadhana, not only for mantra or ritual — but for becoming the disciple worthy of the Eternal Guru.

Sadhana Structure: 3 / 5 / 21 Days

Choose your duration based on your inner calling:

3

You may begin this sacred practice on any Purnima, Navaratri, or especially on the auspicious night of Guru Purnima — or at any time, with a clear and heartfelt Sankalpa (sacred resolve).

Guru Bhairava Sadhana – Step by Step

1

Guru Prarthana (Invoking the Guru)

Sit in stillness. Fold hands and chant:

गुरुर् ब्रह्मा गुरुर् विष्णुः गुरुर् देवो महेश्वरः।
गुरुः साक्षात् परब्रह्म तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः॥
"Gurur Brahmā Gurur Viṣhṇuḥ Gurur Devo Maheśwaraḥ
Guruḥ Sākṣhāt Parabrahma Tasmai Śhrī Gurave Namaḥ"
🔱 Visualization
Visualize Bhairava as the Guru — black as midnight, holding trishula and damaru, seated in supreme stillness. He is your breath, your conscience, your mirror.
2

Lighting the Deepam and Dhoopam

Light the lamp and incense facing East or North. Chant:

Mantra (1 Mala - 108 times)
"Om Kālabhairavāya Namaḥ"

As the smoke rises, feel your thoughts and desires being carried to the Guru. Let the fire consume your impurities.

3

Guru Dakshina – Surrender of Pancha Vikaras

Before mantra japa, offer these five inner enemies to the Guru:

Take 5 black sesame seeds and with each, speak:

"O Bhairava, I surrender my [Desire / Anger / Attachment / Greed / Ego] at your feet. Burn it in your fire. Let only your will remain in me."

💘
Desire
Kama (काम)
🔥
Anger
Krodha (क्रोध)
🔗
Attachment
Moha (मोह)
💰
Greed
Lobha (लोभ)
👑
Ego
Ahamkara (अहंकार)

Let this be your true dakshina, more than any gift or offering.

4

Dhyanam – Guru Bhairava Meditation

Close your eyes. Visualize Bhairava sitting in shmashana (cremation ground), radiating silence and compassion, with dogs at his side, surrounded by the fire of transformation.

🌬️ Breath Dharana (Sarvavijñāna Bhairava Tattva)
Inhale (Puraka): "He is within me" | Saḥ mayi antargataḥ asti.
Exhale (Rechaka): "I am within Him" | Ahaṁ tasmin antargataḥ asmi

Feel the boundary between you and Him dissolve.

5

Japa – Guru Bhairava Mantra Chanting

जप

Choose from the following mantras:

🔸 Beginner Mantra (Simple & Powerful)
"Om Baṁ Bhairavāya Namaḥ"

108 or 1008 times

🔶 Guru Bhairava Dhyana Mantra (Advanced)
"Om Namo Bhagavate Guru Bhairavāya Rudra Rūpāya,
Kālāya Mahākṣāya Sarvajñānāya Svāhā"

Chant with rhythm and bhava — not for result, but as surrender.

6

Bhava Arpana – Emotional Offering

From your heart, offer your essence:

"O Guru Bhairava, I am yours. You are not just my teacher — you are my very breath, my guide through darkness, the mirror of my soul."

If inspired, sing a Kalabhairava Astakam or just remain in silent presence.

7

Naivedyam and Final Offering

Offer simple Naivedyam or as you wish to:

🥛 Milk
🍎 Fruit
🌿 Tulsi water
🍬 Black sesame sweets
🍃 Any sattvic food

Conclude with gratitude, knowing the Guru's grace is ever-present.

"The Guru does not give you anything new. He simply removes the veil of ignorance, revealing the light that has always been within you."
